Ogunjobi, Alexander, and Cramer studied students in a bachelor’s-level introductory microbiology course. Learners used spaced-repetition flashcard software with instructor-made cards to scaffold review of dense course material.

Researchers compared exam scores and institutionally validated survey perceptions with parametric t-tests, asking whether the resource moved performance and self-concept in a newly introduced discipline.

Limitations and what we don't know yet

Abstract-level reporting omits sample size, which exams, and how control/comparison groups were defined for the t-tests. Unchanged means can hide subgroup gains. Self-report perceptions can rise with any novel support. One introductory microbiology course may not generalise. Card quality and daily adherence were not detailed here.
