Spaced repetition nearly doubled the odds of passing a French medical entrance exam

Among 523 Rouen candidates, spaced repetition remained an independent success predictor (aOR 2.09) alongside grades, sleep, sport, and prep courses.

In a large French survey of medical-school entrance candidates, students who reported using spaced repetition were about twice as likely to pass — even after accounting for grades, prep courses, sleep, and sport.


What the researchers did

Burel and colleagues invited all 618 first-year medical entrance candidates at the University of Rouen (2023) to complete a post-exam, self-administered questionnaire; 523 responded (84.6%). Items covered revision methods (including spaced repetition and reviewing past exams), private preparatory classes and summer courses, lifestyle (sleep, physical activity, smoking), and secondary-school grades.

They first ran univariate comparisons between those who passed and those who did not, then a multivariate logistic regression for independent predictors of admission success. Of respondents, 134 (25.6%) passed the entrance exam.


What they found

  • Successful candidates reported spaced repetition more often (44.8% vs 20.3%; p < 0.001) and more often reviewed past exams, attended private prep or summer courses, and held higher school grades (univariate).
  • In multivariate regression, independent predictors included:
    • spaced repetition — adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.09 (95% CI 1.16–3.48);
    • secondary-school gradesaOR 3.19 (2.33–4.37);
    • private preparatory classaOR 2.02 (1.11–3.66);
    • sleep durationaOR 1.49 (1.12–1.99);
    • regular sportaOR 1.81 (1.13–2.93).

What this means for learners and educators

  • Spaced repetition looks like a trainable lever beside fixed background factors such as prior grades — worth teaching explicitly in entrance-exam support, not leaving to chance.
  • Lifestyle still showed up independently: sleep and regular sport were associated with higher odds of success in this model.
  • Prep courses helped too — so spacing is part of a package, not a magic substitute for curriculum structure or socioeconomic access to tutoring.
  • Universities can pair validated study techniques with wellness messaging rather than treating them as rival advice streams.

Limitations and what we don't know yet

This is observational and self-reported after the exam — students who passed may recall or claim “good” methods more readily (recall bias), and the study cannot prove spaced repetition caused success. “Spaced repetition” was not observed as app logs or card counts. One French entrance pathway may not generalise. Smoking and other lifestyle details in the abstract receive less multivariate spotlight than sleep and sport. Residual confounding (motivation, hours studied) remains plausible.
