
Highlighting and rereading are not useless because coloured ink or a second pass is inherently bad. They fail when the feeling they produce is mistaken for learning. A highlighted sentence looks familiar; a reread paragraph flows more easily; an answer seems obvious when it is visible. Those experiences are real, but they mainly show processing fluency—how easy material feels right now—not whether you can retrieve, explain, or apply it later.

None of this guarantees durable access. In an exam, conversation, meeting, or unfamiliar case, the page is absent. Spaced repetition is useful here because it schedules returns after some forgetting, when recall provides better information than familiarity.
Keep the check small. A five-minute closed-book review of a lecture can be more diagnostic than an additional thirty minutes of rereading. If recall is weak, inspect the cause:
- Was the original explanation unclear?
- Is the question too broad?
- Did you remember a phrase but not the relationship?

Rereading is not forbidden. Use it purposefully:
Before retrieval, reread enough to obtain a first foothold in difficult or new material.
After a failed attempt, reread the exact passage that corrects the error, then close it and retry.
For orientation, reread headings, a summary, or a marked map before entering a large source.
For craft and close reading, reread prose, legal language, poetry, or code when the wording itself is the object of attention.
The key question is: “What will I do differently after this pass?” If the answer is only “feel more familiar,” add a question, a prediction, or a retrieval task.
A 20-minute replacement routine

- Read or watch for eight minutes. Pause at natural boundaries; make only sparse marks.
- Write for four minutes with the source closed. State the main claim, three key points, and one question.
- Check for three minutes. Correct omissions and identify one misunderstanding.
- Practise for three minutes. Answer one application question, solve a near problem, or invent an example.
- Schedule a two-minute return. Tomorrow, retrieve the outline before consulting your notes.
The routine feels harder than highlighting because it reveals uncertainty. That discomfort is information, not a sign that you are worse at learning. A manageable effort to retrieve is often exactly what turns exposure into durable knowledge.

Replacing every note with flashcards. Cards are useful for compact, recurring prompts; concepts also need explanations, diagrams, and authentic tasks.
Writing pages from memory without checking. Retrieval needs feedback. Correct the model, not just the score.
